Celebrating Clinical Trials Day: Why May 20th Matters

Every year on May 20th, the medical community celebrates Clinical Trials Day, but let’s be honest: for most people, it’s a date that slips by unnoticed. At Tribe Clinical Research, we see it a little differently. To us, this day is more than just a line on the calendar—it’s a celebration of curiosity, discovery, and the foundation of modern medicine. It’s the reason so many treatments we rely on today even exist.

So, why does May 20th matter?

The date goes all the way back to May 20, 1747, when a Scottish naval surgeon named James Lind conducted what is widely considered one of the first controlled clinical trials. While serving aboard a ship, he set out to answer a critical question: what actually cures scurvy? Instead of guessing, he divided sailors into groups and tested different treatments. The result? Citrus fruits worked, and lives were saved. It may sound simple now, but at the time, this was groundbreaking. Lind’s approach set the stage for everything that followed, shaping the way we study treatments today through structured, evidence-based research.

From citrus to cutting-edge medicine

Fast forward to today, and clinical trials are still driving some of the most important breakthroughs in healthcare. Every medication, therapy, or medical device you see in use has gone through a clinical trial process to ensure it is safe and effective. From treatments for chronic conditions to life-saving therapies for complex diseases, clinical research is what keeps medicine moving forward.

A few fun facts about clinical trials

  • The average clinical trial can take years to complete, depending on the condition being studied.
  • Many breakthroughs you hear about in the news started as small, local clinical trials.
  • Participants in clinical trials often gain access to new treatments before they are widely available.
  • Clinical research is not just for major hospitals; many studies take place right here in local communities.

Why does this matter to you?

Clinical trials aren’t just about science; they’re about people. They are about patients who are looking for answers. Families searching for hope. And communities that benefit from better, more effective care. At Tribe Clinical Research, we’re proud to be part of that process. Every day, we work alongside physicians, patients, and sponsors to help bring new treatments to life right here in our own communities.

How you can be part of it

You don’t have to be a scientist to help advance medicine. Participating in a clinical trial is one way anyone can help shape the future of medicine while also potentially gaining access to new

treatment options. Even just learning more about clinical research helps spread the word and supports innovation.

Clinical Trials Day is a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we can go. From a simple experiment with citrus fruits to today’s advanced therapies, progress starts with a question… and the willingness to find the answer. At Tribe Clinical Research, we’re honored to be part of that journey.
